JAN 2019

Get set for a dose of fast and furious cycling at Melbourne’s world-famous Australian Formula 1™ Grand Prix track.

After its hugely successful inaugural event in 2017, Towards Zero Race Melbourne returned in 2018 with a twilight timeslot at Melbourne’s stunning Albert Park. In 2019 Towards Zero Race Melbourne is back with the world’s fastest men and women hitting the Australian Formula 1™ Grand Prix track on Thursday 24 January.

Criterium – closed circuit style – racing is fast, strategic and captivating. The Union Cyclisite Internationale (UCI) has sanctioned Towards Zero Race Melbourne as a criterium race.

Here’s what to expect:

  • The circuit race format, especially on a flat course like this, is best suited to the fastest men and women in the sport.
  • Watch for teams who have the fancied riders for the bunch finale as they try to hold the tempo high throughout the race, controlling the peloton and ensuring there isn’t a breakaway.
  • Teams who don’t carry an identified sprinter, will try to breakaway early, attempting to stay away and take an opportunist victory.
  • As the race nears the final laps, expect someone to go clear to take the win – usually a time trial specialist who can maintain a high tempo.
  • Watch out for a rider trying to maintain a speed higher than that of the peloton and cause a surprise.
  • Don’t miss each of the sprinter’s teams as they form ‘sprint trains’ aiming to deliver their favoured rider to victory in a high-octane finish.

This event will also promote the importance of road safety thanks to the continued support of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

Towards Zero is a plan to ensure no one is seriously injured or killed on Victorian roads. It acknowledges that as humans, we can make mistakes, but we can’t accept that death and serious injuries should be a consequence of those mistakes.

No one deserves to die on Victorian roads. By driving at safe speeds, providing more road safety education for motorists, driving the safest car we can afford, and building safe roads, Towards Zero is achievable.

Parks Victoria

Parks Victoria is proud to welcome Towards Zero Race Melbourne to Albert Park, one of Melbourne’s most-loved public spaces.
